Idea Shower’s Firefox add-on “Read it Later” is one of the recent additions to my suite of installed Firefox add-ons. Following is a short summary directly from the developer’s site:

  • Save pages to a reading list to read when you have time
  • Click to Save Mode – Quickly batch a reading list just by clicking on interesting links
  • Offline Reading Mode – Read the items you’ve saved for later on the plane, train, or anywhere
  • Access Anywhere – Manage your list in any browser, on any device
  • Sync Between Computers – Sync your reading list with any number of computers, work or home
  • After reading, bookmark pages on your preferred bookmarking service

This fantastic add-on has revolutionized the way I use the web. How many times has one interesting link distracted me from the page I’d already decided was worth the read? I have a new “work flow” when it comes to perusing the web: I read what I came to read and when I see a link there to something else I don’t want to miss, one click has it saved and ready to read later and immediately off my mind for now. Its the same concept of the GTD inbox.

Speaking of in boxes, you know that your RSS reader is your “inbox for the internet” right? On Google Reader, there is a built-in check mark next to each link headline you can click. I used to open up Google Reader in headline view and scan each headline and starring what I wanted to go back and read and ignoring the rest. Read It Later removes a lot of clicking out of that process and puts the to-read links in a better place.

Not only does this save a lot of time, but the time is better spent. No more losing focus. Those sections of down time where I might usually begin random surfing now have meaningful reading waiting for them. I miss less – things I may have stopped reading to read something else are finished instead, and links I would have otherwise skipped over are added to the que. I have the same reading list available on my Windows desktop, my Macbook, and my Iphone. I haven’t even played with the offline features yet.

That’s my sales pitch for this perfectly free add-on. At the moment I’d probably have to name this my favorite Firefox addon for its usefulness and ease of use. It is easily worth the two minutes to download it and try it out for yourself.

Web surfing that is. Here are links to some of the web sites that caught my interest over the weekend. Thanks to Hawaii Blog for the idea.

HOW TO: Stay Organized With Google Calendar
I’ve been using Google Calendar for some time. If you aren’t and want to, this is a good primer. I picked up a few things I hadn’t thought of too.

I’ve watched the Antique Road Show on PBS a few times and always liked it. I used to enjoy Orange County Choppers back when it was new – not so much these days. Can’t put my finger on why exactly.

Right now I have my Tivo set to catch Pawn Stars. I can’t put my finger on why I like this show either, but I do. My time spent watching television is very limited. (I choose to waste my time here on the internet where I get to push more buttons.) Many days I watch no network television at all outside of a little news. So, when I devote my attention to something, it is because I like it, not because I’m filling time.

Pawn Stars is about this guy who runs a pawn shop in Las Vegas with his father and young 20-something son. The old man is crusty around the edges, the kid is…well, he’s a twenty-something male and that says enough, and the owner is sort of a no nonsense everyman type of guy. Who knows a lot about antiques, art, and other stuff, and when he doesn’t he seems to know who does and can summon them to his shop within a day. The miracle of television.

The entire show usually consists of people bringing interesting items in to sell. Antique war weapons and memorabilia, a mysterious jet fighter ejection chair, works of art, pleasure boats, Pac Man machines – you name it. A few minutes is given to each item. You see them wheel and deal on the price. As often as not, some expert comes in and reveals whether the item is a fake or genuine and suggests its worth.

Of course, there’s always some sort of internal drama. One show it was the kid buying the boat which apparently violates some golden rule of pawn shop-running. He got himself in deep kim chee for that one. But it worked out and the boat ended up being a bargain. Another time the old man got fed up with the cussing and instituted the cuss jar. Then there was the bet between the young guy and his grandfather over whether he could sell a watch at a certain price. If the kid lost, he had to wear a suit – if the old man lost, he had to wear baggy jeans. Gramps lost and looked ridiculous in the baggy jeans.

So, if you liked Antique Road Show, but don’t like how slow people talk on PBS, give Pawn Stars on the History Channel a try. Let me know what you think of the program in the comments.

This new law makes it illegal to sleep on sidewalks, benches, bus stops, etc on Oahu, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The city council just voted 8-1 to approve it.

First, I have to say “but for the grace of God, there go I.” I feel sorry for anyone who is sleeping on sidewalks whether it is the result, in whole or in part, of their own decisions or circumstances outside their control. Usually I’m sure it is some combination. In any case, it could be me, and who knows – someday it might be.

If it ever is me, I hope society will help me. I don’t want society to help me continue to live a dangerous and humiliating existence, I want to be helped towards something better and helped away from being a burden on society, my family, and myself.

I’m in favor of the bill because it is compassionate. First, it is compassionate towards society because it will make the sidewalks and other public facilities we all share the cost of more pleasant to use.

Second, it is compassionate towards the “homeless” who will make up the majority of those inconvenienced by the law. I see it as cruel when society allows people to exist like that. We are doing them no favors by permitting them to crash anywhere they like, living an uncomfortable life in the way of everyone else, and we certainly aren’t doing those of us who’s taxes pay for those sidewalks and would like to use them any favors.

Councilman Charles Djou said he introduced the bill at the request of Waikiki Neighborhood Board members who complained that homeless people who are barred from sleeping at Kapi’olani Park and other city facilities at night are migrating to the fronts of hotels and other businesses during early morning hours.

“City parks and city sidewalks are meant for the benefit of everyone,” Djou said. “No one individual or group of individuals should have the right to occupy a city park or city sidewalk and treat it like their private property.”

The bill’s sidewalk provisions include benches and bus stop seating.

Patty Teruya, chairwoman of the Nanakuli/Ma’ili Neighborhood Board, said it’s throughout O’ahu, and not just Waikiki, that residents have to stand to wait for buses because there are people sleeping on benches and in bus shelters meant for passengers.

Homeless shelters that have been set up throughout the island are not being used, Teruya said.

I don’t get the ACLU objections to this. Have they ever tried to get a permit to go camping on an actual public campground on Oahu? Sure, its possible, but it costs money and camping on a campground is illegal unless you jump through the hoops. I can’t even take my dog.

So, it is illegal to camp on a campground that I’m already paying for through my taxes, but the ACLU thinks it is violating rights to make it illegal to camp on a sidewalk or bus stop?

But Daniel Gluck, senior attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai’i, questioned the constitutionality of the bill. Djou had previously cited a similar law in Seattle that was upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Gluck, however, said that bill restricted sleeping only in certain parts of Seattle and only during certain hours.

“This ban would apply to every single sidewalk in the entire county 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Gluck said.

“You can’t legislate the homeless out of existence,” he said. “You have bans at Kapi’olani Park and the beaches. This is just one more attack on the homeless. This is not a productive use of the council’s time.”

No one is trying to legislate the homeless out of existence. If anything, they are trying to legislate them into a more healthy and dignified existence. What is wrong with that? They are also legislating them into an existence that doesn’t infringe on other people’s ability to use public sidewalks, bus stops, and parks comfortably.

I want to hear what you think. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think.

I received this in an email from a friend of mine…

And here is the reply from the mother who’s child supposedly submitted the above drawing:

Dear Mrs. Jones,

I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer.

I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit.  I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it.    Her picture doesn’t show me dancing around a pole.  It’s supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot.

From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.

Sincerely,

Mrs.  Smith

I didn’t bother checking snopes to see if this is real (I doubt it is) because its funny either way.

Some of these HBO series are better than most new movies these days. True Blood is a vampire story with the twist that the vampires are living among us – they have come out of the closet so to speak. The storyline flows really well against this backdrop because the whole vampire aspect is made so much more believable that the typical on screen vamp tale.

There is sort of a new age explanation for what animates vampires, many of the traditional powers and weaknesses of vampires are handled as myth, and there is sort of a political and cultural tension that is analogous to the way homosexuals and other minorities are and were treated both by law and society.

So, I’ll put this up with the other good HBO series that paved the way – The Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, and Rome.

I’m one episode into “Big Love.” If that first episode is an indicator of the rest of the season, I doubt I’ll be as enthusiastic should I ever blog about it.

Here are the Firefox extensions I have going at the moment.

All-in-One Sidebar – this one is nice for my widescreen monitor – shifting realestate from the top to the side.

Tree Style Tabs – same as the sidebar – much more orderly now that I’m used to it and keeps the shape of my actual browsing space taller.

Xmarks – this is another must – keeps all my bookmarks synced between my laptop and desktop

TwitterBar – easy twitter posts right from the FF address bar.

Zementa – I have this but don’t really use it much. Yet.

SmarterFox – this one is actually sort of useful, but I haven’t gotten in the habit of making the most of it.

Personas for Firefox – quick way to keep Firefox looking good

Cooliris – very nice image viewer but this one is on the chopping block. Get it and use it if you like looking at pictures. A lot. And you don’t mind it being big, clunky, and not really integrated well with the browser.

Read it Later – I just began experiementing with this one. Lets you easily add links or pages to a list available for later viewing. Online or offline. List is synced with your other computers and mobile device.

Speed Dial – Every time you open a tab you see nine links with big thumbnails of your favorite sites.

That’s about it.
